Autumn 2

This is what we will be learning about this  half term in Year 2. More information about the different subjects can be found in the 'Curriculum' section of the school website.

 

Reading:

Our main focus text will be 'Hodgeheg' by Dick King-Smith. We will be reading this in our daily reading lessons and using it to develop the children's retrieval and inference skills using different activities such as role play and hot seating. We will have 5 reading sessions each week. Our second focus book this half term will be Vlad and the Great Fire of London by Kate Cunningham.

 

Writing:

During our writing lessons, we will be writing a set of instructions on how to bake cookies. We will be focusing on capital letters and full stops in our sentences as well as question marks and exclamation marks.  We will also be looking at descriptive language and children will learn how to use imperative verbs. We will also be doing some narrative writing based on the book The Owl Afraid of the Dark.

 

Maths:

This half term, we will be learning about:

Addition and Subtraction

Shape

Addition and Subtraction: Pupils will be taught to solve problems with addition and subtraction, recall and use addition and subtraction facts to 20 fluently, and derive and use related facts up to 100, add and subtract numbers using concrete objects, pictorial representations, and mentally and use this to check calculations and solve missing number problems.

Shape: Pupils will be taught to name and describe the properties of 2D and 3D shapes. They will then be able to describe and write patterns with these shapes in them. We will also look at lines of symmetry. 

 

Science:

There is no Science topic this half term.

 

History:

Year 2 will be learning about the Great Fire of London. We will be establishing what London was like in 1666. We will the work out how the fire started and who was at fault. We will learn how the fire spread so quickly and how the fire was eventually put out. We will then investigate how the fire shaped the future of London and ask the question was it a good thing or not? Our knowledge organiser is found below.

 

Art:

This half term, the children will be creating collages using different materials to create appropriate textures in order to recreate a picture of the Great Fire of London. We will be making a silhouette to go in front of the background. Please see an example below.

 

Religious Education:

In RE, we will be looking at  'Good Choices'. We will look at the Ten Commandments and the 5 pillars of Islam.
