Autumn 2

This is what we will be learning about this first half term in Year 1.  More information about the different subjects can be found on the 'Curriculum' section of the school website.

Reading

This half term we will be reading a range of picture books in our reading lessons to develop the children's love for reading. Our main focus will be on increasing the children's fluency however we will also be developing a range of reading skills such as identifying and improving vocabulary, making predictions and using inference to answer questions.  

Some of the books we will be sharing this half term are:

 

  • Funny bones by Janet and Allan Ahlberg
  • Handa's Surprise by Eileen Browne
  • The Lonely Christmas tree by Chris Naylor-Ballesteros

Writing

During our writing lessons, we will be begin our half term looking at and writing poetry around fireworks and bonfire night.  We will be looking at the different features of a poem and use our senses to describe. Towards the end of the half term we will look at the narrative Little Red Riding Hood. We will be focusing on capital letters and full stops to start our sentences. The children will then write their own narrative based on the story Little Red Riding Hood. 

Maths

This half term we will be learning about: Addition and Subtraction and Shape

Geography

This half term we will be looking at our local area.

PE

PE this half term is on Mondays. We will be learning how to play dodgeball outside (weather permitting), so children are advised to wear warmer PE kit. For our indoor session we will be looking at different balance and agility skills.

Computing

Using Purple Mash, we will be looking at pictograms as well as how to follow and create simple computer instructions. 

PHSE

In PHSE we will be learning how to keep ourselves safe and how to manage risks. We will look at real and imaginary dangers and who to ask for help if we feel in danger. 

Music

Using Charanga we will celebrate a wide range of musical styles. We will focus on 

Listening, Singing, Playing, Composing and Performing. 

 

This half term we will be looking at adding rhythm and pitch and how music tells us stories about the past. 

Religious Education

This half term we will be looking at how we celebrate special events. We will discuss the ways in which we celebrate special events and how religions mark festival days. We will begin to develop an understanding of celebrations including religious festivals. We will explore the religious festivals of Harvest, Eid ul Fitr and Sukkot.

Art

In art we will continue to explore colour mixing, thinking about primary and secondary colours. We will then explore the work of Wassily Kandinsky, a Russian painter known for his abstract art.
