Spring 2 in Willow Class

We're so close to our SATs tests now that we will be using every opportunity to practice those skills that we've learnt throughout school over the last few years. Look out for additional practice papers coming home and please feel free to request any additional revision material.

Weekly maths and reading homework will still be set through Mathletics and First News, but there may also be tasks set on Learning By Questions. Keep your eye on your emails!

English

This half term we will be writing our own supernatural encounter narrative based on an extract from Skellig by David Almond. We will be focussing on our uses of ambitious vocabulary for effect and apppropriate use of a range of punctuation. I can't wait to see what creatures they experience!

Our non-fiction writing this half-term links to our History topic of World War 2 as we write our own survival guides. We've got some exciting experience days planned!

We will continue reading Skellig to finish the last few chapters, but the remainder of our reading lessons will focus around revision by exploring a range of short texts and looking carefully at our inference and vocabulary skills.

And of course in story time, we will continue reading Crater Lake by Jennifer Killick until we reach the dramatic conclusion! What will be next? Some children have requested the sequel, Evolution Lake whereas others are rooting for the sequel to Fear Ground which is coming out in March: Flock Horror!

Maths

This half-term will see us finish our unit on measure and then get stuck into revising the entire curriculum. We will carry out our final practice paper to help us target our revision. We are still really enjoying using the ipads to work in our maths lessons on Learning By Questions and will continue to utilise them for our revision.

Science

We will begin our unit on the Circulatory System, looking specifically at the effect of exercise, diet and smoking on our bodies through a range of practical experiments and knowledge rich activities. This unit will culminate in a visit to a high school to take part in a real heart dissection.

PE

This half term our Tuesday PE session will be Dance, indoors. We will look at combining shapes and circular movements to make repeated routines, both solo and with a partner using our Real Dance program. We will not only hone our technical skills and abilities but will work on our teamwork and creativity. Fridays PE session will be a range of sports and Commando Joe's missions - this is an outdoor session.

PSHE

In PSHE, we will be finishing our DATE (Drugs, Alcohol, Tobacco education) topic with some role play scenarios before we move on to our unit around self identity. We will look at the UN rights of the child, the experience of refugees and homelessness. In addition to this, our Mind Mate lesson around mental health will look at happiness and how we deal with our emotions.

History

Our World War 2 topic will continue this half term as we focus on the experience of the evacuees, the role that women played in the war and the part that propaganda played.
